A Little About Myself (Just to get Started)

Hey y’all. My name is Tavi. And even though you most likely will never meet another Tavi in your lifetime, for formality’s sake I will add that my last name is Wallace. When I first introduce myself, usually the person I’m talking with usually either says “Tavi? So… is that short for something else?” or “What does that mean??”  Well, no- it is not short for anything else, thank you. I’m just plain old, not-recognized-as-a-word-by-spell-check (‘did you mean ‘taxi’?), 2-syllable Tavi. And what it means is “original” in Italian and “a new creation” in Hebrew. Which define me quite well, I must say. But I’m sure that if you continue on and read my blog you’ll figure that out somewhat quickly all on your own.

I’m a whole 19 years old and originally from a small town near Louisville, Kentucky. And now I live in Tucson. And no, it’s not for college. I’m living with 11 other people, a goldfish (and sometimes Penelope, an antisocial hedgehog- I’ll explain later) and am volunteering through the PCUSA (Presbyterian Church) as a year-long YAV (Young Adult Volunteer) working as the coordinator of a homeless ministy. And no, it’s not really like the Peace Corp. It’s its owwwwn thing. So, how did this happen you might ask ? I’ll summarize by saying that it was a little bit for spiritual discernment, a little bit for peace of mind and a little bit for service to the underpriviliged.

I’d like to end with a bit of a disclaimer- for privacy reasons I have been asked by the homeless individuals I write about to either change or shorten their names. Also, I have a specific sense of humor that will undoubtedly show up throughout my posts. If you find yourself laughing out loud or smiling to yourself as you read, you share my same humorous preference. If you, more often than not, are confused by my “humor” (I put it in quotes because to you, it probably isn’t all that comical at all), then I apologize, but seriously- you’re missing out. Keep that in mind as you read. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy!
